Meet Ana Celeste Cavallo

Ana Cavallo

Advancing Sustainability Through Research and Innovation

Ana Celeste Cavallo is a 27-year-old Italo-Argentinean researcher dedicated to sustainability and environmental innovation. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she moved to Italy at the age of four, embracing a multicultural background that shapes her global perspective on research and sustainability. Since 2025, she has been at UHOH assessing the acceptance and environmental impacts of sustainable intensification approaches (thesis 5.1).

Building Expertise in Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment

Ana has cultivated a strong foundation in sustainability through her work as a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Research Fellow at the University of Bologna, where she focused on biochar and compost amendments in vineyards. Her research involved soil lab analysis, soil organic carbon dynamics, and model coupling. In parallel, she worked as a Freelance LCA Analyst, contributing to sustainability certifications and environmental impact assessments.

Her international experience extends beyond Italy. At Biostech in Lisbon, she conducted LCA analyses for company products, while within the EIT Climate-KIC project in Zurich, she participated in the Journey Summer School, exploring climate action, system innovation, and community engagement. Additionally, her involvement in the Social Food Enterprise Program strengthened her understanding of sustainability challenges in food and health systems.

Ana’s early career experiences also include an internship at Barilla and Tuttoambiente in Parma, where she studied environmental legislation, analysed scientific data and company reports—laying the groundwork for her expertise in sustainability research.

Research Interests: Sustainability Meets Innovation

Ana’s research sits at the intersection of Life Cycle Assessment, agri-food systems, and energy innovations. She is particularly fascinated by sustainable agriculture technologies such as urban farming, agrivoltaics, and sustainable intensification. Her work is driven by a combination of scientific analysis and innovative thinking, pushing the boundaries of sustainable solutions.

A Love for Research: Born from Curiosity

Ana’s passion for research began while working on her master’s thesis. What started as an academic requirement quickly turned into a journey of curiosity. She found herself constantly asking:
“What if I change this parameter?”
“What happens if I dig deeper into this topic?”

The excitement of uncovering new knowledge led her to consider research as a long-term pursuit. When offered a PhD opportunity, she realized that research wasn’t just an academic endeavour—it was a way to drive meaningful change.

Why Bioeconomy?

Ana’s interest in bioeconomy began during her bachelor’s degree, when she attended a course on circular systems. This led to her thesis on the Circular Economy package (2018), focusing on food waste reuse in Barilla’s sustainability strategy. Since then, she has been committed to exploring bio-based solutions that can transform industries and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Future Aspirations: Bridging Research and Impact

Looking ahead, Ana envisions a career in academia or research institutions, where she can contribute to sustainability science while making a tangible impact. Whether through mentoring, teaching, or leading sustainability projects, she hopes to bridge research with real-world applications.

A Personal Glimpse: Hobbies and Inspirations

Proactive and optimistic, Ana enjoys activities like trekking, yoga, swimming, reading, gardening, and spending time with family, friends, and dogs outside of her work.

Professionally, Ana connects the most with “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin—a song with a powerful rhythm and adventurous spirit. Its fusion of rock, Eastern influences, and orchestral elements reflects her ambition, adaptability, and determination—qualities that define both her research approach and professional journey.
