Pioneering Sustainable Materials

Aitana Zoco

At 24, Aitana Zoco is beginning an exciting journey as she explores the research topic of antiviral activity of woody materials and their coatings in built environment (thesis 4.2) at the University of Eastern Finland starting October 1st, 2025. With a master’s degree in materials science from the SERP+ Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program, Aitana has developed a solid foundation in material development and characterisation, particularly focusing on hydrogels.

A Focus on Sustainable Materials

Aitana’s educational background has equipped her with expertise in materials science. Her passion for creating eco-friendly solutions is clear, as she now turns her attention to exploring the potential of woody materials in bio-product value chains. For Aitana, the goal is simple: to contribute to a more sustainable world through innovation in material chemistry.

Research Interests: Chemistry for a Better Future

Aitana is fascinated by the chemical characterisation of materials and their role in creating a more sustainable future. Her research focuses on how different materials, particularly those sourced from nature, can be used to develop greener solutions. She’s especially intrigued by how woody materials can be part of a circular bioeconomy.

Her curiosity and drive to answer the “why” questions fuel her research. Aitana believes that by understanding materials on a deeper level, we can discover new possibilities for eco-friendly innovations.

Why Aitana Chose Research

Aitana’s passion for research stems from her childhood curiosity—always asking, “But why?”. This natural curiosity led her to pursue science, and it was during her bachelor’s thesis that she realized how fulfilling it was to find answers to those questions. That sense of discovery continues to drive her as she seeks to develop sustainable materials that could have a real-world impact.

Future Aspirations: Leading the Way in Sustainable Innovation

Looking ahead, Aitana is determined to become a leading researcher in the field of sustainable materials. She hopes to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical applications, ensuring that innovations in materials science contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Beyond the Lab: Hobbies and Inspirations

Outside of her research, Aitana enjoys spending time in nature. Whether it’s hiking, climbing, or enjoying a picnic with family and friends, these activities keep her grounded and help her maintain a creative and balanced mindset.

On a personal note, Aitana draws inspiration from the song “Pura Vida” by Aranguren and Jacob Mayhem. The song’s message of positivity, persistence, and following dreams resonates with her professional philosophy: to overcome challenges, stay motivated, and reach her goals through dedication and hard work.
