Víctor González Mallén

A Researcher Driving Sustainability Through Bioeconomy

Victor Gonzalez

Víctor González Mallén, a 27-year-old researcher from Madrid, Spain, has always had a deep connection with nature. While growing up in the city, he spent many holidays in the countryside, helping his family with farming. These early experiences shaped his interest in science and sustainability, ultimately leading him to the field of bioeconomy. He is currently researching ecological relevance of waste management in bioeconomy (thesis 3.4) at BOKU in Vienna.

Building Expertise: From Microbial Ecology to Life Cycle Analysis

Víctor’s professional journey reflects his passion for research and innovation. During his Master’s studies in Stockholm, he worked as a research assistant trainee in microbial ecology at Stockholm University. His project involved metagenomic analysis of the genus Rhodoferax, exploring its ecological role.

For his Master’s thesis, he conducted a consequential Life Cycle Assessment (cLCA) on biomass-to-hydrogen technology, specifically WoodRoll©, developed by the Swedish company Cortus. This research was part of the IEA Bioenergy Intertask “Synergies of Green Hydrogen and Bio-based Value Chains Deployment,” coordinated by Utrecht University.

Research Interests: Advancing Sustainability Through Innovation

Víctor’s research focuses on tackling environmental challenges through:

  • Understanding the politics and economics of the bioeconomy at multi-level, from local to global.
  • Assessing the environmental impacts and benefits of the bioeconomy using a life cycle perspective, especially in circular supply chains.
  • Designing and optimizing bio-waste management systems.
  • Exploring innovative technologies to revalorise bio-waste into high-value products.

Why Research? A Career of Continuous Learning and Collaboration

Víctor sees research as a key driver for a more sustainable and circular society. He values the creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration that research demands. The opportunity to continuously learn, discuss ideas with others, and contribute to meaningful change makes it a fulfilling career path.

Why Bioeconomy? A Multidimensional Approach to Sustainability

For Víctor, the bioeconomy is a perfect fit because it addresses three major environmental challenges: climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. Its multidisciplinary nature makes it an exciting and dynamic field with the potential to drive real sustainability solutions.

Additionally, Víctor’s lifelong connection to nature and agriculture, combined with his passion for biology, makes bioeconomy the ideal path for his professional aspirations.

Looking Ahead: Aiming for Impact in International Policy and R&D

Víctor envisions a future where he can use his scientific expertise to support evidence-based policymaking. His goal is to work with international institutions like the Joint Research Centre (JRC) or the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to contribute to global sustainability efforts. However, he does not rule out the possibility of working to help waste management systems achieve better performance through sustainability management and research and development (R&D).

A Personal Glimpse: Hobbies and Inspirations

Beyond research, Víctor enjoys food, reading, theatre, and hiking in nature.

He also resonates with “Superpoder” by María José Llergo. The song embodies empowerment, resilience, and the drive to create positive change despite obstacles. Its message of collective action aligns with his vision for a more ethical and sustainable world.
