A Journey Rooted in Global Development

Agathe Lucas

At just 25, Agathe Lucas has already made a mark in agricultural research and development. She brings valuable international experience and academic expertise to the DESTINY team at AgroParisTech, where she begins researching agricultural biomass production management in contrasted European regions (thesis 6.3) starting October 2024.

Shaping Sustainable Agriculture Through Research

Agathe’s career began at the Gret NGO, where she worked on building tea value chains in Lao PDR. Prior to this, she conducted a study on agroecological production management in Cambodia. These experiences, blending fieldwork and research, have prepared her to support sustainable agricultural practices in her current role.

She holds an Agronomy Engineering degree from L’institut Agro in France and a Master’s in Rural Development from Ghent University in Belgium. This strong academic background has given her a deep understanding of both the scientific and socio-economic aspects of agriculture.

Research Interests: The Nexus of Governance, Production, and Sustainability

Agathe is passionate about how value chain governance and agricultural production systems affect land use and climate change adaptation. Her research is driven by a curiosity to understand why people make the choices they do. This curiosity pushes her to explore complex issues in the field of bioeconomy.

Why Bioeconomy?

For Agathe, the bioeconomy is a key path to sustainable development. By applying interdisciplinary knowledge, she believes it can help shift to a more circular economy, where resources are used efficiently, and the environmental impact is reduced.

Looking Ahead: Aspirations in Research and Development

Agathe’s future aspirations are clear: she aims to continue supporting rural and agricultural development through rigorous and impactful research. Her dedication is reflected in her approach to work, her enthusiasm for learning, and her commitment to making a difference in the world.

Beyond Research: The Person Behind the Scientist

When she’s not immersed in research, Agathe enjoys baking and, of course, tasting her creations. Her colleagues would describe her as enthusiastic, dedicated, and structured—qualities that not only define her professional persona but also shape her approach to life.

Finally, as a professional, Agathe finds inspiration in the song “Territory” by The Blaze, which she feels reflects her drive to carve out her own space in the field of sustainable agriculture.
